Research has been conducted at the University of North Carolina in the area of sports injuries/fatalities since 1965. As a result of this research, many changes have been made across all sports to ensure the safety of its participants. This led to the establishment of the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research (NCCSIR) at UNC in 1982. Research now focuses on generating reliable data that can be used to make sports safer for athletes, increase the amount of information that is available about catastrophic sports injuries, and to increase general awareness of catastrophic injuries in all sports.
